Named Library Journal's Best Small Library in America in 2008, the Chelsea District Library has grown from a 22-book Depression-era collection into a nationally recognized community hub on South Main Street, complete with a makerspace, tool-lending Garage, and a mobile outreach van called Mobee.

📖 About Chelsea District Library
The Chelsea District Library traces its roots to 1877, when the Chelsea Library Association organized under Michigan's state library law with $1 annual dues and roughly 500 books. A new chapter began on February 28, 1932, when the Chelsea Child Study Club started over with just 22 donated books; by 1959 the community had rallied around Mrs. Edward J. McKune's donation of her historic hotel, and the McKune Memorial Library opened that June. The library became a district library on January 6, 1997, extending service to the City of Chelsea, Lyndon and Sylvan Townships, and portions of Lima and Dexter Townships, and moved into its current 18,000-square-foot building in November 2006. In 2008 Library Journal honored it as the Best Small Library in America, sponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Today CDL serves 16,126 residents with a collection of books, films, audiobooks, and digital titles, the Ingenuity Engine makerspace, the CDL Garage of borrowable tools and toys, and the Mobee mobile library for outreach.
