📖 About Athens Community Library
The Athens Community Library serves the village of Athens in Calhoun County, Michigan, from a building with deep community roots. The structure at 106 East Burr Oak Street was built in 1922 as a Community House — a memorial to soldiers and sailors of all the wars — and at its dedication in 1923 residents presented a large wall clock and an original oak table and chairs that remain in the library to this day. The building originally housed both the library and village offices. An extensive remodel in 2008 added new space and improved the basement, modernizing the facility while preserving its historic character. The library belongs to the Woodlands Library Cooperative, part of Michigan's statewide network, giving Athens cardholders access to the Michigan eLibrary (MeL) for research databases and Libby for e-books and audiobooks. Director Missy Irons leads a library that holds 8,738 volumes and serves a service population of approximately 4,537 residents, with summer reading and teen programs rounding out its offerings.
