📖 About Dyer Library
The Dyer Library traces its founding to a bequest from Olive Dyer in honor of her husband Oliver, and first opened in the spring of 1881 in the basement of Saco City Hall, with Sarah W. Tucker as its inaugural librarian at a salary of $400 per year. In 1893 the library moved into a purpose-built building designed by architect Horace G. Wadlin, featuring a broad wooden double arch dividing the reading room from the stacks — a gift further enriched by endowments from patrons including Cornelius Sweetser, who contributed a $10,000 maintenance fund. The library relocated again in 1955 to a former private residence, with a new wing added in 1974. In 1976 Dyer Library merged with the York Institute (later renamed the Saco Museum) to create the unified cultural institution that stands today at 371 Main Street. The Children's Room honors former children's librarian Lillian Reed. The combined institution participates in the Minerva Library Network, giving cardholders access to collections across Maine, and library cardholders receive complimentary admission to the Saco Museum.
