Nix Library

One of the oldest branches still serving New Orleans, the Nix Library has stood at the corner of South Carrollton Avenue and Willow Street since 1930 — a Depression-era landmark built on a lot donated by three brothers in memory of their parents, and one of the first NOPL locations to reopen after Hurricane Katrina. As of late 2025 the branch is temporarily closed for an electrical panel replacement; check nolalibrary.org for its reopening date.

📖 About Nix Library

The Nix Library opened on December 1, 1930, as the sixth facility of the New Orleans Public Library system. Its existence traces back to a 1928 gift from brothers James, Ralph, and John Nix, who donated the corner lot at South Carrollton Avenue and Willow Street in memory of their parents. That donation freed the $20,000 the city had set aside for land acquisition, redirecting those funds into the building itself. The branch answered years of advocacy by Carrollton neighborhood residents who had pressed through the 1920s for a library of their own. Nearly a century later it still anchors the Riverbend end of the streetcar line. The building came through Hurricane Katrina with only minor flooding and reopened about two months after the storm — one of the first NOPL branches back in service. In 2021–2022 it underwent a major accessibility renovation, adding a wheelchair lift, an accessible restroom, and automatic doors, and held a ribbon-cutting on September 8, 2022. In August 2025 the branch closed temporarily for an electrical panel replacement; patrons should check nolalibrary.org for current status.
