📖 About Concordia Parish Library

Established in October 1928, Concordia Parish Library holds the distinction of being the second-oldest parish library in Louisiana and the first to be funded by dedicated tax support. The main branch in Ferriday anchors a parish-wide system that also operates two additional branch locations and a bookmobile, reaching residents throughout this 747-square-mile stretch of Mississippi bottomland. Ferriday itself — population roughly 3,200 — has produced a remarkable cluster of nationally known figures, including rock pioneer Jerry Lee Lewis, gospel and country musician Mickey Gilley, televangelist Jimmy Swaggart, and CNN journalist Campbell Brown, all raised in the same tight community that the library has served for nearly a century. The parish is also home to a rich Civil War and Reconstruction-era history: in 1860 Concordia Parish had the highest proportion of enslaved people of any Louisiana parish, a legacy documented in the library's local history collections.
