📖 About Lānaʻi Public and School Library

The Lānaʻi Public and School Library serves the roughly 3,000 residents of Lānaʻi, the smallest publicly accessible island in the Hawaiian chain and part of Maui County. Opened on October 15, 1975, it was the seventh combined public-and-school library built in the state and the first of its kind in Maui County, a model that lets one small facility serve both townspeople and the students of Lānaʻi High & Elementary School. As the island's sole library, it lends books, DVDs, magazines and CDs, and is the one place on Lānaʻi offering free public computers, internet access and Wi-Fi to library-card holders.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Is this really the only library on Lānaʻi?

Yes. Lānaʻi is served by this single branch of the Hawaiʻi State Public Library System, located at 555 Fraser Avenue in Lānaʻi City. There is no other public library anywhere on the island.

Why is it called a 'public and school' library?

It is a combined facility that functions as both the community's public library and the library for Lānaʻi High & Elementary School (LHES). When it opened in 1975 it was the seventh such shared public-school library in Hawaiʻi and the first in Maui County, which lets one building serve residents and students together on a small island.

Can I get online here if I'm visiting Lānaʻi?

The library is the only place on Lānaʻi that provides free internet access, public computers and Wi-Fi, available to library-card holders. It's open Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, and closed on weekends.
