The Story of the Library in Louisville

The Louisville Free Public Library was established in 1902 by an act of the Kentucky State Legislature and merged with the Polytechnic Society of Kentucky in 1904. Its Beaux-Arts Main Library at 301 York Street was built with support from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie — secured through the efforts of Louisville's Scottish Society — with construction beginning in 1905 and the building completed in 1906, though labor strikes delayed the opening of full patron services until 1908. Designed by the New York firm Pilcher and Tachau, it introduced an open-stack system that let patrons browse the shelves directly, a novel idea for its era.

The Crescent Hill Library, which opened in 1908 at 2762 Frankfort Avenue, was one of the first of nine Carnegie-endowed libraries built in Louisville. Designed in the Beaux-Arts style by the Thomas & Bohne firm, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981 for its architectural significance and community impact, and reopened in March 1994 following a major renovation.
