Owensville is a small town in Gibson County in southwestern Indiana, and its public library carries the Carnegie name proudly: on December 3, 1915, the Carnegie Corporation of New York approved a grant of $12,500 for the construction of a library building at 110 South Main Street. Indiana received more Carnegie library grants than any other state — 164 buildings in 155 communities — and the Owensville building is among the Carnegie libraries still in active public use today. The library serves approximately 4,000 residents with a collection of more than 21,000 volumes and roughly 434 programs a year, from toddler storytimes to job-search workshops.
