Hammond Public Library has served the city of Hammond since its early industrial era, growing alongside the community founded around George H. Hammond's 1869 meatpacking plant that pioneered refrigerated rail transport across the nation. The library holds a landmark distinction in Indiana history: it was the first library in the state to form a recognized union, a local of AFSCME. Today the main branch at 564 State Street houses the Suzanne G. Long Local History Room, preserving the stories of a city whose Pullman Standard plant built M4 Sherman tanks during World War II and whose early football club — the Hammond Pros — was a charter member of the league that became the NFL. The library also serves as an official Federal Depository Library in partnership with Purdue University Northwest, providing free public access to U.S. government publications ranging from census data to the Federal Register.
