The East Bonner County Library District traces its roots to the Sandpoint Public Library, which once occupied the upper floor of the old City Hall on Main and Second. A memorable moment in local history came in December 1967, when a chain of high school students from the Class of '68 hand-carried every book from City Hall to a new home on North Second Avenue. In 1974, voters formed the district, aligning its boundaries with the Pend Oreille Hospital District and stretching from just east of Priest River to the Montana border. A 1998 bond funded the current Sandpoint building, a Clark Fork branch, and a bookmobile; a 2017 addition pushed the Sandpoint footprint to its current size. Today the district also operates outreach to homebound patrons, care facilities, daycares, and schools, and in 2025 adjusted its boundaries to mirror Bonner School Districts #84 and #83.
