📖 About Waialua Public Library
The Waialua Public Library is the North Shore branch of the Hawaii State Public Library System (HSPLS), the only statewide public library system in the United States, and is the smallest public library on the island of Oʻahu. Its roots run deep in the plantation community: it opened in 1927 as the "Waialua Community Station" inside the Waialua Sugar Plantation office, where a Waialua High School student circulated the books for ten dollars a month paid by the Territory. By 1936 the collection had grown enough to become a branch library, moving into the rear of the old Waialua Post Office, and in 1951 ground was broken for the present building on Kealohanui Street — later expanded in 1975 with an 840-square-foot addition and air conditioning. In 1996 the American Library Association recognized Waialua with the EBSCO Excellence in Small and/or Rural Public Library Service Award for its service to a community of 10,000 or fewer. A single HSPLS card issued here borrows across every branch on all the Hawaiian Islands and unlocks the system's shared digital collections.
