The Story of the Library in Waimea

The Waimea Public Library on Kauaʻi opened in August 1950 and celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2025. Established under the Kauaʻi Public Library Association, the building at 9750 Kaumualii Highway — across from Cook Field at Waimea High School — was designed by Marcus C. Lester and Guy N. Robinson and constructed by Shigeo Nakano, and it has served the plantation and ranching communities of Kauaʻi's west side ever since.

On Hawaiʻi Island, the Thelma Parker Memorial Public and School Library honors the Parker Ranch heiress Thelma Parker (Annie Thelma Kahiluonapuaapiilani Parker) and stands on land tied to Parker Ranch, the historic cattle ranch centered on Waimea (Kamuela). The current building opened October 26, 1978, replacing an earlier facility, and remains one of Hawaiʻi's combined public-and-school libraries, serving both the general public and local students.

About Public Libraries in Waimea

The two libraries listed under Waimea both belong to the Hawaiʻi State Public Library System (HSPLS), the only statewide public library system in the United States, which links every branch on all the major islands under a single catalog and card. Importantly, they sit in two different Waimea towns on two different islands: the Waimea Public Library on the west side of Kauaʻi, and the Thelma Parker Memorial Public and School Library in Waimea (also called Kamuela) in the ranching uplands of Hawaiʻi Island (the Big Island). Any Hawaiʻi resident or visitor can get a free HSPLS library card that works at both, unlocking print collections, computers, Wi-Fi, and the statewide digital library.

With a free HSPLS card, cardholders can borrow eBooks and audiobooks and stream and search the system's digital collections and research databases from home — including Libby/OverDrive titles and reference resources — on any island at no cost.
