📖 About Brockway Memorial Library
Miami Shores was developed in the 1920s as "America's Mediterranean" — a planned community of Italian-inspired architecture on Biscayne Bay, incorporated in 1932. Brockway Memorial Library was established in 1949 when industrialist George A. Brockway donated the funds to create a dedicated public library for the village's residents. Unlike most South Florida libraries that belong to Miami-Dade County's system, Brockway operates independently under the Miami Shores Village government, giving it the flexibility to tailor services to the community's roughly 11,500 residents. In 2002 the library expanded its multimedia facilities, adding digital resources and modern equipment that complement its traditional book and periodical collections. Today it remains the "central cultural and educational hub of Miami Shores," as described in local historical records, and continues to serve one of metropolitan Miami's most architecturally distinctive neighborhoods — 25 of the original 1920s Mediterranean homes are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
