One of Florida's oldest community libraries, the Maitland Public Library was born in 1896 when resident Clara Dommerich donated 360 books and the town organized a reading room in a local teacher's living room. After moving to a storefront near the railroad tracks, the library settled into its South Maitland Avenue building in 1907, which expanded three more times — in 1959, 1972 and 1989. It remains an independent nonprofit governed entirely by volunteer trustees, with roughly 97% of its operating budget coming from Orange County property taxes. Today the collection exceeds 96,000 physical and downloadable items, including nearly 29,000 eBooks and eAudiobooks. The library is open Tuesday through Sunday, with late hours until 9 pm Tuesday through Thursday. A groundbreaking ceremony on April 7, 2026, launched construction on a brand-new 20,000-square-foot facility in Quinn Strong Park — the first new building in the library's 119-year history — with completion expected in fall 2027.
