📖 About Delmar Public Library

Delmar Public Library was formally organized on April 24, 1940, under the leadership of New Century Club President Mrs. Samuel M. Ellis, with its first Board of Trustees dedicated that same day. The original library occupied a single room — only 12 by 15 feet — in the Marvel Building on Grove Street, a space it outgrew over three decades. In 1970 the library moved into St. Stephen's United Methodist Church's community center, gaining 1,836 square feet and expanding service to 46 hours per week. In the early 1980s the library relocated to its permanent home at the corner of Bi-State Boulevard and Grove Street; a major renovation and expansion was completed in December 2018. Today the library serves Delmar residents — a community uniquely straddling the Delaware–Maryland state line — with print collections, digital resources through the statewide Delaware Library Catalog, children's and adult programming, and free Wi-Fi. The current building was dedicated in memory of Delmar resident Lyndall C. Hayman, his wife Virginia, and their son Robert.
