The Story of the Library in Bainbridge
Public library service in Bainbridge traces back more than a century: the Decatur County Library Association organized in 1896 and a county library was established in the early 1900s, with a dedicated library building constructed around 1940 as a joint enterprise of Decatur County and the City of Bainbridge. In 1952 the library joined with neighboring Seminole County to form a regional system, which later expanded into the Southwest Georgia Regional Library System now serving Decatur, Miller, and Seminole counties.
The system's headquarters branch, the Gilbert H. Gragg Library, is located at 301 South Monroe Street in downtown Bainbridge and functions as the central library for the three-county region, housing the largest collection and administrative offices for the system.
