📖 About West Custer County Library District
The West Custer County Library District has served the high-elevation ranching and arts community of Westcliffe since its founding in 1930, when the first meeting of the Custer County Library Committee was held on February 1 of that year under the leadership of County Schools Superintendent Lou C. Beamon. The library began as a volunteer effort in the County Courthouse before moving to a small room at the Community Center in 1943. In 1989, voters approved a tax district, providing dedicated funding that enabled construction of a dedicated library building that same year. A voter-approved mill levy increase in 2003 funded a major expansion completed in 2005. Today the library serves 2,659 active cardholders, circulates roughly 40,000 items per year, and offers distinctive services including a lending Instrument Library, a telehealth Privacy Booth, home delivery for those unable to visit, and a Local History Center preserving Custer County's past.
