📖 About Longmont Public Library
Longmont has a remarkable library history: in 1871 Elizabeth Rowell Thompson established what is considered Colorado's first library here, though that early collection of 300 books was lost within a year. The town later received one of Andrew Carnegie's grants, and the resulting single-story Carnegie Library opened in 1913 on this same stretch of downtown. After six decades of service — by which time it held roughly 22,000 books — that building closed on August 7, 1972, just one week before the new library constructed next door opened its doors. The current City of Longmont Public Library at 355 Emery Street (formerly operating from 409 4th Ave before the civic-center relocation) carries that legacy forward, providing study and meeting rooms, a makerspace with 3D printing, Discovery Passes for free or discounted admission to local museums and Front Range attractions, and a Library of Things for borrowing non-traditional items. The Friends of the Longmont Library support adult learning, English language learning classes, genealogy assistance and Spanish-language programming.
