The William H. Smiley Branch opened in September 1918 as part of Denver's Carnegie-funded branch program, built with a share of an $80,000 grant to serve neighborhoods including Berkeley. The roughly $20,000 English-cottage-style building was designed by Park French of the Denver firm Mountjoy, French & Frewen, and the design was considered so successful that the Carnegie Corporation requested pictures and a description for its own records. The branch is named for William H. Smiley, a Denver schoolteacher and superintendent who came to the city in the 1880s and was remembered as 'The Grand Old Man of Education in Colorado.' Sited within Berkeley Park near the lake, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was approved as a Denver landmark in 1989. The library later underwent a major renovation funded through the Elevate Denver bond program, updating the century-old building while keeping its historic cottage character.
