The Central Library is the largest building in the Denver Public Library system, occupying a 540,000-square-foot postmodern structure designed by architect Michael Graves and completed in 1995 at a cost of roughly $91.6 million. It replaced a 1956 building by Burnham Hoyt, which itself succeeded Denver's 1910 Carnegie-funded Greek-temple library. The building's fifth floor houses the renowned Western History and Genealogy Department, whose collections of manuscripts, photographs, maps, and newspapers document the American West. Its seventh floor holds the Vida Ellison Gallery, and the branch draws more than a million visitors a year. Following a major renovation, the Central Library celebrated a grand reopening in 2023 with refreshed public spaces spread across its many floors. The building famously hosted meetings during the 1997 G8 Summit in its first-floor reference room.
