📖 About Beverly Hills Public Library

The Beverly Hills Public Library is an independent municipal library, completely separate from the Los Angeles Public Library and the LA County Library system. Founded by city council ordinance on December 23, 1929, it moved into its current landmark building in 1990 as part of the Beverly Hills Civic Center complex designed by celebrated architect Charles Moore (1925–1993). Moore blended Spanish Revival, Art Deco and postmodern elements into an ensemble of open courtyards, colonnades and grand staircases that echoes the adjacent 1932 City Hall. With a collection of nearly 200,000 volumes and one of the finest fine arts book collections in the Los Angeles area, the library attracts more than 51,000 visitors per month. Free library cards go to all residents of Beverly Hills and of Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura Counties; a small annual fee applies outside those counties.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Beverly Hills Public Library part of the Los Angeles Public Library system?

No. Beverly Hills is an independent incorporated city, so the Beverly Hills Public Library is a standalone municipal library — completely separate from LAPL and from the LA County Library system. It is funded by the City of Beverly Hills and operates its own card, catalog and digital resources.

Do I need to live in Beverly Hills to get a free library card?

No. Free library cards are available to any resident of Beverly Hills or of Los Angeles, Orange or Ventura Counties — just bring a valid photo ID and proof of current address. Residents outside those three counties may obtain a card for a small annual fee.

What makes the library building architecturally significant?

The current building opened September 11, 1990, as part of the Beverly Hills Civic Center designed by celebrated architect Charles Moore (1925–1993). Moore blended Spanish Revival, Art Deco and postmodern elements — echoing the adjacent 1932 City Hall — creating an ensemble of open courtyards, colonnades, promenades and grand staircases. The previous 1965 building by Martin Stern appeared as architect Mike Brady's office exterior in The Brady Bunch.

Does the library have a notable fine arts collection I can browse in person?
