📖 About Hollis Public Library
Founded in 1985, the Hollis Public Library operates entirely through volunteer effort inside the Hollis School on Prince of Wales Island, one of Alaska's most accessible remote communities thanks to the Inter-Island Ferry Authority service that has connected Hollis to Ketchikan and the broader island road system since the late 1960s. Hollis itself has a layered history: established in the late 1890s as a mining settlement, it became a major logging camp for the Ketchikan Pulp Company in 1953 and served as the base for timber operations across Prince of Wales Island before those operations relocated to Thorne Bay in 1962. Today the library serves a tight-knit community with a collection of more than 17,000 volumes, internet access, and a summer reading program for children. Community volunteers staff all open hours, and new volunteers are always welcome — contact the library at hollispubliclibrary@gmail.com.
