📖 About Sumiton Public Library
The Sumiton Public Library is a member branch of the Carl Elliott Regional Library System (CERL), a regional network spanning Winston and Walker counties in northwestern Alabama. Sumiton (pop. 2,444) is unique among CERL communities in that it straddles both Walker and Jefferson counties, its history rooted in the coal-mining and railroad boom that followed the Civil War. The settlement went through earlier names — Bald Eagle, Commercial, and Summit — before settling on "Sumiton," reflecting its position atop one of Walker County's highest ridges. The library takes its inspiration from Carl Elliott, the Alabama congressman who authored the 1956 Library Services Act extending federal library funding to rural Americans, and who died in nearby Jasper in 1999. Sumiton is also the birthplace of country star Jimi Westbrook of Little Big Town, adding a note of musical heritage to the community. A Sumiton library card links patrons to all six CERL branches and to the Alabama Virtual Library (AVL) for statewide digital access.
