Founded in 1987 with broad community support, the Geraldine Public Library grew quickly enough that it outgrew its original home and moved in 1993 to its present location on Alabama Highway 227 — a building constructed entirely from donations made by local citizens Mary Martin and Nell and Coolidge Isbell. Today the library serves approximately 900 Geraldine residents plus the surrounding communities of DeKalb County, operating roughly 37 hours each week. It is a branch of the DeKalb County Library System, an eight-branch network whose automated circulation system lets patrons borrow from and return items to any member location. The collection includes fiction and nonfiction, large-print books, audiobooks, DVDs, and CDs, with public internet terminals and a fax machine and copier available for community use. The library also hosts a monthly vision-support group meeting and a summer reading program for children in kindergarten through sixth grade.
