📖 About Wilcox County Library

The Wilcox County Library is the public library serving Camden and all of Wilcox County, a community of roughly 11,670 residents in the Alabama Black Belt. Camden itself was founded in 1833 on land donated by planter Thomas Dunn and renamed by local physician John D. Caldwell for his South Carolina hometown — its 1857 Greek Revival courthouse still anchors the town square and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The library's collection of more than 42,600 volumes spans fiction and nonfiction, large-print books for vision-impaired readers, audiobooks, DVDs and Alabama-specific titles, with a particular emphasis on genealogy resources suited to researching families with roots in the Black Belt. Through the Alabama Public Library Service (APLS) network and the state-funded Alabama Virtual Library (AVL), every cardholder gains free, 24/7 digital access to premier academic and general databases at no charge.
