📖 About Carbon County Public Library — Main Branch (Rawlins)

The Carbon County Library System is one of Wyoming's oldest public library networks. It began in April 1922 as "The Rawlins Reading Room" in the Osborne Building, organized by P.E.O. members and Lions Club wives with 800 books. It became the Rawlins Public Library on September 2, 1924, and the official Carbon County Public Library on December 1, 1925, initially housed in the former high school (the Carbon Building). By 1937, the system held more than 9,600 books with a checkout rate of 42,960 per year. The library moved to a new facility within the county courthouse complex on March 20, 1940, gaining evening hours for the first time. Today the Rawlins main branch at 215 West Buffalo Street anchors a seven-location system also serving Saratoga, Encampment/Riverside, Elk Mountain, Hanna, Medicine Bow, and the LSRV area. The Rawlins branch features a modern MakerSpace, a Library to Business Station, free public notary service (by appointment), free test proctoring (by appointment), public meeting and study rooms, 24/7 Wi-Fi, and reading challenges for children, teens, and adults.
