📖 About Alderson Public Library
The Alderson Public Library is the public library of Alderson, a small town of roughly 975 residents perched on the Greenbrier River where Greenbrier and Monroe counties meet in southern West Virginia. The town takes its name from Elder John Alderson, a Baptist missionary who settled here in 1777, and was formally incorporated in 1881. Alderson became an important livestock shipping point on the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway and is also historically notable as the site of FCI Alderson (originally Federal Reformatory for Women), which opened in 1927 as the first federal prison for women in the United States. The library at 115 Walnut Avenue offers circulation of up to ten items per patron, free public computer access, free Wi-Fi, printing and faxing, and a free notary service by appointment. It participates in the West Virginia Library Network (WVLN), giving patrons access to the statewide WV Reads digital collection via Libby and interlibrary loan across West Virginia.
