One of Vermont's finest Romanesque Revival library buildings, the Jeudevine Memorial Library was donated to Hardwick in 1897 by Malvina Jeudevine in memory of her husband Alden and son Cornelius. Architect Lambert Packard crafted the $29,000 structure from dark Massachusetts brownstone with a local granite base, nine original stained glass windows and golden oak walls — a building lovingly expanded in July 2025 with new accessible spaces and a restored children's room.

📖 About Jeudevine Memorial Library
The Jeudevine Memorial Library is the public library of Hardwick, Vermont, a Caledonia County town in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom. Malvina Maria Jeudevine (born 1828), daughter of one of Hardwick's earliest families, commissioned the building as a memorial to her husband Alden E. Jeudevine (1811–1888), a prominent local businessman with interests in mercantile, granite, lumber and real estate, and their son Cornelius "Nealy" Alden Jeudevine, who died at age sixteen. Architect Lambert Packard of the Fairbanks Company in St. Johnsbury designed the Romanesque Revival structure; the building was accepted by the Hardwick Select Board on December 15, 1897 at a total cost of $29,000 including the site. Dark brownstone from Libby, Massachusetts clads the walls, local granite forms the base, and craftsman Bert Reed carved distinctive stonework ornaments. Inside, nine original stained glass windows and golden oak walls survive intact. On July 7, 2025, a major expansion project was completed, adding full accessibility, a new children's space, expanded meeting rooms and carefully restored original architectural elements, giving the 1897 structure a second century of service.
