📖 About Aiken County Public Library
Aiken County Public Library is the flagship branch of the ABBE Regional Library System, serving Aiken, Bamberg, Barnwell and Edgefield counties from a three-story red-brick building in Aiken's downtown historic district. The building has deep civic roots: chartered in 1888 as the Aiken Institute — one of the area's first modern schools — it opened in 1891 and became Aiken Elementary School in 1937 before the library moved in during 1990. A $3 million renovation completed in January 2022 modernized the 10,000-square-foot interior with a new ADA-compliant entrance, elevator, dedicated youth and teen rooms, a creative lab, a South Carolina and Local History Room, and a 14-person AV conference room, all while preserving the building's historic character. The library's history as a public institution traces to 1880, when residents founded a subscription library that evolved through the Dibble Library (1926) and merged with county services in 1950. Today the ABBE system reaches 14 locations and extends free cards to all residents of the four-county region.
