📖 About Ashe County Public Library
Founded in 1932 by the Ashe County Women's Club with 500 donated books, Ashe County Public Library is the anchor branch of the Appalachian Regional Library, a three-county consortium formed in 1962 with Watauga and Wilkes libraries. The library moved through multiple downtown West Jefferson locations before opening its purpose-built home on Library Drive in 1977; two major expansions — the most recent completed in 2009 — more than tripled that original footprint. Today the library serves the High Country community with a 15-computer lab, a Heritage Room holding local history and genealogy materials used by researchers nationwide, and the Ashe Seed Library — a partnership with NC Cooperative Extension and Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture that preserves open-pollinated Appalachian seed varieties. Patrons may also borrow wireless hotspots and Kindle readers, and the Friends of the Library operate an in-house cafe whose proceeds fund programming.
