📖 About Marks-Quitman County Library
The Marks-Quitman County Library is the public library of Quitman County, seated at 315 East Main Street in Marks, Mississippi. Marks was founded in 1907 and named for Leopold Marks, a Jewish immigrant from Germany who became Quitman County's first state legislator and donated railroad right-of-way to attract the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad. The city holds a singular place in civil-rights history: in 1968 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. visited Marks and, moved by the extreme poverty he witnessed among children in the Mississippi Delta, wept — a moment that galvanized the launch of the Poor People's Campaign, his last major organizing effort before his assassination. The library serves Quitman County's roughly 7,800 residents with a collection of 12,000 volumes, ten internet computers with a 30-minute time limit when patrons are waiting, wireless internet, fax and copier service, and digital access to CloudLibrary for eBooks and audiobooks and MAGNOLIA for research databases. A card requires one photo ID showing Quitman County residency, or two proofs of residency if no photo ID is available.
