📖 About Mabel Public Library
The Mabel Public Library serves the small city of Mabel and surrounding rural Fillmore County in the driftless bluff country of southeastern Minnesota. Mabel — named for the daughter of an early settler — sits at the convergence of Canfield Creek and the Upper Iowa River watershed, a landscape of steep wooded ridges and rich farmland shaped by Norwegian and other Scandinavian immigrants who arrived in the second half of the 19th century. The library operates as a statutory city library with a governing board and an active Friends Group, and has adopted a fine-free policy so that families are never penalized for keeping materials a little longer than planned. It is a member of SELCO (Southeastern Libraries Cooperating), the regional cooperative of 11 southeastern Minnesota counties, which provides access to the shared catalog, Libby eBooks and audiobooks, and statewide ELM databases. The library offers books and large print, CDs, DVDs, and public computer access, and runs a children's Story Hour program that brings young readers together during the week.
