📖 About Willmar Public Library
The Willmar Public Library was established in 1904 with an Andrew Carnegie grant and has served residents of Willmar and Kandiyohi County for more than 120 years. In 1958 it merged with the Kandiyohi County Library, and a purpose-built facility opened on the current site in 1966. By 1972 the library joined the Crow River Regional Library system, and in 1983 it became part of the Pioneerland Library System — a consolidated regional network that today spans 32 member branches across nine counties of west-central Minnesota, including Big Stone, Chippewa, Kandiyohi, Lac qui Parle, McLeod, Meeker, Renville, Swift, and Yellow Medicine counties. In 1996 Willmar voters approved a local sales tax to fund a major renovation and expansion, completed in September 1999, that produced the current building. The library's collection of approximately 60,000 physical volumes is complemented by microfilm archives of local newspapers dating to February 19, 1895, multilingual materials in Spanish, Somali, and other languages, and a full suite of statewide digital resources through Minnesota's ELM program. A single Pioneerland card unlocks borrowing at all 32 branches, and items may be returned to any member library.
