📖 About Rockville Memorial Library

Rockville Memorial Library is the main branch of Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL), serving the county seat from the heart of the Rockville Town Square district. The library grew out of Rockville's earlier downtown branch on Maryland Avenue and moved into its current landmark building, designed by the firm Grimm + Parker, in November 2006. The architecture is a deliberate homage to the nearby genomics research corridor and the Human Genome Project: sweeping curved exterior walls, double-helix patterns in the first-floor tilework and bookcases, and murals tracing the history of the city. Owned and operated by Montgomery County, the branch is part of the countywide MCPL system, so a single library card borrows across every Montgomery County branch and connects to Maryland's statewide Sailor network. Today it pairs a large browsing collection with meeting and collaboration spaces, public technology, and a full slate of programs for children, teens and adults just steps from the Rockville Metro and Ride On bus routes.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How big is Rockville Memorial Library and does it serve more than just the local branch?

Rockville Memorial is a three-story, roughly 102,000-square-foot building, making it one of the largest facilities in the Montgomery County Public Libraries system. In addition to the branch collection, it houses MCPL's system-wide administrative offices.

Does Rockville Memorial Library have study rooms and a computer lab?

Yes. The second floor holds bookable study rooms, a computer lab, and a public meeting room alongside the adult and reference collections, while the first floor has a children's room, teen area, and another public meeting room. See our guide on how to book a library study room.

Why does the Rockville library building have a double-helix theme?

The current library, designed by Grimm + Parker and opened in November 2006, was built as a tribute to the mapping of the human genome, reflecting Montgomery County's role in genomics research. The curving exterior walls echo that theme, and double-helix patterns appear in the first-floor tilework and along the bookcases, alongside murals showing the history of Rockville.

Which nights is Rockville Memorial Library open late, and what about weekends?

The library is open until 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday it runs 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., so there are hours every day of the week.

Where do I park at the Rockville Town Square library?

The library opens onto Rockville Town Square and offers 90 minutes of free parking when you park in one of the Town Square garages (A, B or C) and have your ticket validated. It also sits within walking distance of the Rockville Metro Red Line station and several Ride On bus routes.

Does my Rockville library card work at other Montgomery County branches?

Yes. Rockville Memorial Library is part of Montgomery County Public Libraries, a countywide system, so a single MCPL card borrows and places holds across every branch and connects you to Maryland's statewide Sailor network of research databases and digital resources.
