📖 About Davis Library

Davis Library is a branch of Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) in North Bethesda, Maryland. The county acquired the Davis family farmland and opened the roughly 16,000-square-foot building in 1964; its fieldstone exterior deliberately echoes the rural heritage of the site, and a sweeping front lawn still separates the library from the traffic of Democracy Boulevard. Inside, a bronze sculpture titled "Taking Off" by Marcia Billig represents the flight of imagination through reading. The branch serves nearby residents along with commuters and workers from institutions such as the National Institutes of Health and the Marriott headquarters, and shares the countywide MCPL Aspen Discovery catalog — one MCPL card borrows across every Montgomery County branch.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Davis Library set so far back from Democracy Boulevard?

The wide front lawn is the last surviving remnant of the Davis family farm that once occupied the site. Montgomery County acquired the farmland and built the library there in 1964, keeping the open lawn so the fieldstone building sits well back from the traffic of Democracy Boulevard.

What is the bronze sculpture inside Davis Library?

It is "Taking Off" by artist Marcia Billig. The piece was chosen to represent the flight of imagination that reading inspires, and it is one of the branch's signature features.

Which nights is Davis Library open late, and is it open on Sundays?

Davis Library is open until 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday. On Friday and Saturday it runs 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and it is closed on Sundays.

Does my Davis Library card work at other Montgomery County branches?

Yes. Davis is part of Montgomery County Public Libraries, which share a single Aspen Discovery catalog. One MCPL card lets you borrow, place holds and pick up materials at any MCPL branch across the county.
