📖 About Kennebunk Free Library
The Kennebunk Free Library began in 1881 as a small reading room at Cobby's Store, and the Free Library Association of Kennebunk was formally organized in 1882 on the second floor of the Sargent/Ross building. Thanks to a $10,000 bequest from Andrew Walker, the collection moved into Walker Hall from 1888 to 1907; the current building at the corner of Main and Fletcher Streets — a gift of George Parsons, whose portrait still hangs in the Reading Room — was completed in 1906 and dedicated in 1907. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, the library completed a major $1 million expansion in the mid-1990s and was rededicated on October 15, 1995. It joined the statewide Minerva consortium in June 2014, so a Kennebunk card requests and borrows across dozens of member libraries throughout Maine.
