📖 About Jennings Carnegie Public Library
The Jennings Carnegie Public Library traces its roots to 1889, when the Jennings Ladies' Library Association founded the first public library in Jennings, Louisiana — the oldest continuously established library in the state. After the original structure burned in 1901, the association secured a $10,000 Carnegie grant and, with city support, commissioned New York architects Whitfield & King to design a new building. Completed in 1908 in Palladian-Italian Renaissance style, the V-shaped buff-brick building enters through a domed octagonal rotunda at its corner, crowned by Corinthian columns and a full entablature. The south wing was extended in 1952 with compatible brickwork. The library is operated by the City of Jennings and holds roughly 38,919 print, audio and video items, along with the Historic Jennings Photo Collection, the Morse Shell and Photography Collection, Jennings newspapers dating to 1894 and a high school yearbook archive spanning several decades.
