Bristol Public Library has been serving Hartford County since 1892, anchored in a Colonial Revival landmark at 5 High Street designed by New York architect Wilson Potter and dedicated in 1907 — built at a cost of $47,000. A 2006 renovation demolished later additions while preserving the original north facade and added a complementary modern wing. The library's collection has grown from fewer than 4,000 volumes at founding to more than 200,000 books, magazines, DVDs, CDs, and digital items. The Bristol History Room preserves over 3,000 photographs, microfilm of The Bristol Press from 1871, genealogy records, maps (including an 1802 Survey of Bristol Turnpikes), and city directories dating to 1884. A member of Library Connection, Inc. (LCI), Bristol Public Library participates in a shared catalog with 32 Connecticut libraries and the statewide borrowIT CT program. In 2026 it was voted Best Library in the Hartford Courant's Best of Hartford Reader's Poll.
