📖 About Kuskokwim Consortium Library
The Kuskokwim Consortium Library has served as the heart of Bethel, Alaska since its founding in 1975 as the Bethel Consortium Library. Operated jointly by the University of Alaska Fairbanks Kuskokwim Campus, the City of Bethel, and the Association of Village Council Presidents (AVCP), it functions as both the academic library for UAF's regional campus and the public library for the City of Bethel and surrounding Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta communities. The library is housed inside the Yupiit Piciryarait Cultural Center — a landmark 18,000-square-foot facility built in 1994–1995 for $6.15 million — alongside a Yup'ik museum with roughly 5,000 artifacts and a performing arts space. Its reading room overlooks a pond, and the library maintains a dedicated Yup'ik cultural collection room. In 2023, it received the National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the highest honor awarded to U.S. libraries and museums, recognized for its Yup'ik cultural preservation work, digital equity programming, and outreach to food-insecure and homeless residents.
