📖 About Bethel Public Library
Bethel Public Library has served the community since 1909, when author and cooking authority Maria Parloa bequeathed $2,000 and her book collection to found a free public library. In 1914, the Seelye family donated their 1842 Greek Revival homestead at 189 Greenwood Avenue — listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1977 (NRHP #77001386) — to be held in perpetuity as a library. A major expansion completed in 2005 and a renovation finished in 2013 brought the building to approximately 28,600 gross square feet with dedicated spaces for children, teens, adults, and a Local History & Genealogy Room. The library is part of Bibliomation, a 60-library Connecticut consortium sharing a single catalog, so a Bethel card also borrows at member libraries statewide. Today the library welcomes roughly 127,000 visitors a year, holds more than 212,000 items, and runs nearly 800 programs annually.
