The Story of the Library in Charlotte Amalie

The Enid M. Baa Public Library and Archives occupies a historic great house on Main Street (Dronningens Gade) in Charlotte Amalie, a masonry town house dating to the early 19th century once owned by the von Bretton mercantile family. Long the principal public library of St. Thomas, it was renamed in 1975 (by Act 3668) and dedicated on March 20, 1978 in honor of Enid Maria Baa, the pioneering Virgin Islands librarian and archivist who directed the territory's libraries and museums for decades and built its premier Virgin Islands and Caribbean research collection.

Enid Baa graduated from Hampton Institute's library science program in 1933 and became a leading figure in Virgin Islands librarianship, establishing the Von Scholten Collection in 1960 and drafting the 1967 law providing for the archival care of government records. Since the Charles Wesley Turnbull Regional Library opened at Tutu Park Mall in 2012, the Enid M. Baa building has been closed to the public and is being reimagined as a cultural and heritage space.
