📖 About Enid M. Baa Public Library
The Enid M. Baa Public Library and Archives at 20 Dronningens Gade is the historic main library building of Charlotte Amalie on the island of St. Thomas. It is named in honor of Enid M. Baa (1921–1987), who pioneered professional library service in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Ms. Baa earned her library science credentials in the United States and returned to St. Thomas to build the territory's first professionally organized public library system, serving as Territorial Librarian and laying the foundation for what would become the Virgin Islands Public Library System administered by DPNR's Division of Libraries, Archives and Museums. The Charlotte Amalie building served as the primary public library of St. Thomas for generations. It closed to public library service in 2012 when the new Charles W. Turnbull Regional Library opened in Annas Retreat. As of 2025, the V.I. government is renovating the structure to become the home of the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts, a tourist welcome center and public restrooms, with plans for limited library services to be incorporated for the benefit of the Charlotte Amalie town center. For current library service on St. Thomas, visit the Charles W. Turnbull Regional Library at 12 Frydendahl Road, Annas Retreat.
