📖 About Belfast Free Library
The Belfast Free Library is the public library of Belfast, Maine, the Waldo County seat on the western shore of Penobscot Bay. It was established in 1887 by act of the Maine Legislature, following gifts from local benefactors Paul R. Hazeltine and Nathaniel Wilson that helped put the new library on firm footing. More than 135 years later it remains in a historic building at 106 High Street, at the top of Belfast's brick downtown overlooking the bay, where its Abbott Room serves as a gallery and community meeting space for talks, exhibits and events. The library is part of the Minerva shared catalog run through Maine InfoNet, so a Belfast card lets patrons request materials from member libraries across the state and borrow eBooks and audiobooks through the Maine Download Library and the statewide Digital Maine Library research databases.
