📖 About Bad Axe Area District Library
Bad Axe Area District Library was founded in 1990 to serve the City of Bad Axe and surrounding townships — Colfax, Bingham, Grant, Lincoln, Meade, Sheridan and Verona — a combined rural population of more than 7,000 in Huron County at the tip of Michigan's Thumb peninsula. The library holds over 36,000 physical items alongside nearly 40,000 eBooks, e-audiobooks and digital magazines, and its local-history and genealogy collection is a touchstone for families researching their Huron County roots, with historical editions of the Huron Daily Tribune and county census records available on microfilm. On display in the library is an axe-head embedded in a tree section, believed to be the original "bad axe" that gave the city its name — a relic connected to Civil War veteran Captain Rudolph Papst, who labeled the campsite "Bad Axe Camp" on survey charts around 1865 and later returned twice to fight off attempts to rename the town. The library offers free notary service, free test proctoring and circulating Chromebooks and internet hotspots to bridge the connectivity gap in this rural community.

An axe-head embedded in a tree section, believed to be that original camp axe, is on display inside the library.
