📖 About West Baton Rouge Parish Library
West Baton Rouge Parish Library traces its roots to 1933, when the community pooled two purchased books and 343 donated titles to start a lending collection. In 1969 the Louisiana State Library helped relaunch the system as a demonstration library, and on February 1, 1976, the main branch opened at its present address of 830 North Alexander Avenue in Port Allen, just across the Mississippi from Baton Rouge. The library maintains two locations — the Main Branch in Port Allen and a South Branch in Brusly — and adds a Mobile Library that carries collections and programming to underserved parts of the parish. West Baton Rouge is one of Louisiana's sugarcane-growing heartlands, a heritage the adjacent West Baton Rouge Museum (founded by the library in 1968 and opened in 1970) documents through its permanent collection on the sugar industry and plantation-era rural life. A free card unlocks the Louisiana Library Connection's 70-plus databases, Kanopy film streaming, cloudLibrary eBooks, and the statewide collection, plus live homework-help tutoring through HomeworkLA.
