📖 About Augusta-Ross Township District Library
The library's story begins in 1876 when 24 women in Augusta, Michigan, decided to share their love of reading with neighbors, pooling 140 books in a residential building on Canal Street. From that volunteer-driven beginning, the collection grew to more than 128,000 items. In 1967 George C. McKay made a landmark gift to the village: a dedicated library building situated in the village park, donated in honor of his wife, Ella Dole-McKay. That gift gave the library its lasting dual name, McKay-Dole Library, though it operates officially as the Augusta-Ross Township District Library. Today the library serves residents of the Village of Augusta, Ross Township, and the Gull Lake School District within Bedford Township. Wednesday evening hours (until 7:00 PM) extend access for working families and students. The library offers free 24-hour Wi-Fi, public computers, interlibrary loan through the statewide MeLCat system, and access to the Michigan eLibrary (MeL) suite of databases. Library cards are free for residents of the service area.
