📖 About Huntingburg Public Library
The Huntingburg Public Library opened on June 22, 1922, when Dubois County's first public library began with about 1,200 volumes salvaged through a community book shower. Miss Genevieve Williams, the inaugural director, guided the library through its earliest years as it took root in a city founded in 1839 by Colonel Jacob Geiger — a hunter who named his settlement for the game-rich southern Indiana forests. Huntingburg grew into a prosperous furniture-manufacturing center driven by German immigrant craftsmen who arrived in the mid-1800s, drawn in part by the multilingual priest Joseph Kundek who encouraged settlement in Dubois County. Today the library serves the roughly 9,600 residents of Patoka and Cass townships with over 30,000 items, a dedicated Indiana Room for local and state history research, and access to nearly eight million items through the Evergreen Indiana shared catalog. The library participates in INSPIRE, Indiana's statewide virtual library, and offers evening hours four nights a week — among the most generous schedules for a town of this size.
