📖 About Avon Free Public Library

The Avon Free Public Library has served the town since 1798, when attorney Samuel Bishop opened his personal collection of 111 books to local borrowers six times a year — one of Connecticut's earliest lending arrangements. After closing in 1852 and being revived by a group of local women in 1890, the library found its permanent home on Country Club Road with a new building in 1982. A landmark $8.7 million expansion in 2012 doubled the facility to 40,000 square feet, adding expanded meeting rooms, technology labs, gallery space, and the Marian Hunter Local History Room, which preserves Avon's archives and was named in honor of a 9/11 victim and Avon High School graduate. The library lends museum passes to popular Connecticut attractions, offers a Makerspace with 3D printers, and provides patrons with access to researchIT CT — Connecticut's statewide package of research databases. BorrowIT CT lets any Avon cardholder use their card at any public library in the state.
