<p>The South Chula Vista Library opened in 1995 as the city's second branch, designed by the celebrated Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta of Legorreta Arquitectos. Legorreta conceived the 37,135-square-foot building to serve a growing multicultural community, drawing inspiration from Mexican hacienda architecture and prioritizing spatial experience over expensive materials. The result is a one-story complex anchored by a 50-by-50-foot browsing courtyard with a 25-foot ceiling punctuated by 162 skylights. The children's section occupies a 130-foot-long nave beneath a 30-foot barrel-vault copper-clad ceiling painted vibrant blue inside, creating one of the most striking children's reading rooms in the region. A rotated cube on the west side houses the literacy center, which includes a 100-seat multipurpose room with a separate entrance and outdoor literacy patio. The building's earth-tone stucco exterior, native desert plantings, and amphitheater blend into the Southern California landscape. In 1995 the project received an AIA Honor Award recognizing excellence in accessibility, architecture, graphics, lighting, and planning. The library also serves as a County of San Diego Cool Zone and offers passport acceptance services.</p>
