📖 About Acton Public Library
Acton Public Library was incorporated on September 25, 1920, with Blaine Grant as its first president. In its early decades the library operated from individual homes and then from the Franklin School, before the town voted in 1957 to move into half of the old Acton Corner School House — a 1700s-era structure that the library now occupies in full. A 1986 gift from Clifford Holdsworth funded expanded insulation, windows, and walls that allowed the library to claim the entire 900-square-foot schoolroom when the town hall relocated. Among the library's treasured artifacts is the Boston Post Cane, awarded by tradition to the oldest resident of Acton, a portrait of George Washington familiar to generations of local schoolchildren, and a rare 1857 map of York County. The library is part of Maine's statewide network, giving cardholders free access to Digital Maine Library for eBooks, audiobooks, and databases. Weekly Mahjong, Paper Casting classes, summer reading, and children's story hour round out a calendar that punches well above the weight of a 900-square-foot building.
